In order to clearly explain the use of a niche resume, it may be necessary to first explain the meaning of the word “niche.” In this case, it means “a special area of demand for a product or service.” Essentially, it means a very specific employment or career area, such as an administrative office manager or vice president of sales and marketing. So, this type of resume would be created around a central subject, very specific to the job for which your are applying.
What to include in a niche resume
In this type of resume, you want to keep the subject matter strictly related to the job position in question. If you are applying for a position in quality control, the only information you should list as far as skills, qualifications and accomplishments should be related to previous jobs you have held in the quality control sector.
In other types of resumes, such as the chronological resume, all former jobs are listed, irrelevant of what position you held. Usually, you include all duties you held at a previous employer, skills, etc. This is not the case with the niche resume.
Be thorough yet concise
When creating your resume, you want to thoroughly cover any accomplishments, qualifications, awards, achievements or skills directly related to the position for which you are applying, but you want to do so in a precise, brief manner. No employer wants to read page after page of in-depth details. They simply want to be able to easily discern that you are the best candidate for the job by quickly scanning your information. Highlight only those areas from your work history or skill sets that are relevant to the job.
Show your enthusiasm for the job, and be professional
Most resumes begin with an objective, and the niche resume is no different. This is the area where you can perhaps impress a potential employer most, so do this carefully. In your objective, make your statement reflect your enthusiasm for the job; this really lets an employer how much you would like the job. When it is suitable, use action words when describing past employment positions or accomplishments.
Also, as with any resume, check your work! No employer is going to hire you when your niche resume is full of incorrect grammar and misspelled words. Use a simple format, simple fonts and make your document easy to read.
