Resumes That Can Help Mothers Who Need To Go Back To Work
|
There is so much uncertainty for many families because their economic situations are not where they would like them to be. Having a two income family is not uncommon in these times, but for those with small children, there may have only been one bread-winner. The fact is that most families cannot afford to only have one income anymore and mothers are being forced back into the workplace quite often just to help to make ends meet.
For those moms who are getting back into the job market, things may have changed since they last had to write up a resume. There are newer technologies and companies are requiring a different resume style to be submitted. The mom who wants to be competitive in the job market needs to be aware of these changes in order to have a chance at getting that second income their family needs.
• Volunteer Work Does Not Equate to Work History – You can explain the time spent away from the business world by saying you were a stay at home mom. But you should not use any of the work that was done in these duties as work history. It is great if you helped out as a school mom or if you worked with after school programs and such, but you should list them as volunteer work and not as actual job history. The skills you learned and used at this volunteer work can be a great asset to the company that you are applying to, but at the end of the day, you need show only your actual work history in that section of the resume no matter how much work was involved.
• Listing Time Away From the Business World – You can write a resume that is loaded with your prior experience and that does not need to include a timeline. Many companies understand that with the failing economy that many people are going to have holes in their resumes. It is up to you how much you want to divulge when writing your resume about the time you spent away from working in a company. You may be asked for a time line when you interview but then you already have your foot in the door and you may be more comfortable explaining your absence in front of a live person.
• Previous Education – You do not want to downplay your work history or qualifications so leave your education and degrees to the end of the resume. It should come after volunteer work and before your personal references.
If you are having a difficult time figuring out how to write a good resume, you can also ask some of your friends who are working at a company or office. They are going to have some great tips that you can use and can help to proof read your resume for mistakes. There is no reason why a mother who worked in the home should not be able to take these skills and get back into the business world easily.
