Self Employment Based Resumes
|
Many people have tried to create their own startup company in which only a small percentage actually last beyond two years. This is the nature of the beast and cannot be avoided. Even if the company does have some success, it may be necessary to gain employment outside of the business in order for the family to be able to pay the bills. One income families are a thing of the past so one adult may need to run the business while the other gets outside employment. Writing a resume with self employment time is not going to be very hard to do if you write it in the right way.
Using the Positive Aspects of Self Employment
Being self employed, even if the company fails, can mean you bring many traits to the company that those who have never owned their own business would not.
• Leadership Traits – Even if you only had one or two employees, you are offering leadership qualities. You did the hiring and firing and dealt with the everyday lives of your employees. This takes a bit of skill and people handling skills so make sure this aspect is presented on the resume.
• Organizational Skills – Since you were/are the boss, your responsibilities probably included making sure that the office was organized on a daily basis. There are employees to organize as well as products coming in, being created or being shipped out. If the company was in the service industry, then you had to organize the employees to make sure that each project was finished on time.
• Working Within Deadlines – There is no industry where deadlines are not an issue. When you own your own company, you have to make sure that these deadlines are met. If they are not, you are the only person who can answer to customers or clients. Having this ability is going to stand you in good stead with the company that you are applying to.
Be Honest About Your Business
Even if your business failed, it is important to be honest about this. If you are simply looking to add an income to help to support the family because the business is not large enough, you need to include this as well. The main thing here is to not beat around the bush or try to make excuses for why you need an outside source of income. Everyone knows how bad the economy is these days and the fact that you are honest is going to make a better impression than trying to pass the buck. Taking responsibility for failure shows more character than taking responsibility for success.
Make sure that you highlight these individual qualities as they fit into the business you own/owned. Being self employed means that you had more responsibilities than those who worked for someone else and many companies are looking for these qualities in their employees. You are going to be surprised that you may be asked more questions regarding owning your own company by an interviewer than any other position you held.
