The Objective Of A Job Resume Is Important
|
When writing a resume, the most important part of it is the objective. Most just think that this needs to be one or two sentences that explain what they are seeking in a job. Actually, there needs to be much more than that. The objective should equate to a full paragraph that not only states what you want from a company, but what skills you bring to the company. Writing a great objective is not as easy as many think because it needs to be well defined and well written.
• What the Paragraph Needs to State – The paragraph not only needs to state what you want from the company and what they can expect from you, but how your prior positions tie in with the new position you are applying for. The recruiters want to see how you can use those skills that you acquired from your previous jobs to enhance their company. Make sure you are completely honest about your skills in this section as a recruiter can spot when the truth is being stretched even a little bit.
• Format – You never want to use a bulleted or numbered list when writing your objective. Lists can be used in other areas of the resume, but never in the objective. If you want to highlight your skills more, you can always include a summary of qualifications where you can do this. The objective must be in paragraph format with no exceptions.
• Proof Read the Objective – The objective should be a full paragraph with proper grammar and spelling. Make sure the entire paragraph has a flow to it so that it is easy for the recruiter to read and understand. When you read it out loud, does it make sense to you? If it does not, you need to rewrite it unit it does. Have a friend read it before you send it off. This allows for a new pair of eyes to catch anything that you have missed.
• Passive Voice vs. Active Voice – If you do not know the difference between active and passive voice, read up on it on the Internet. There are many great articles that explain how each type of writing conveys your feelings to the reader. You should always use an active voice when writing your objective to show yourself in the best light. An objective that is passive is not going to be aggressive enough to get the job that you are seeking.
When it comes to writing a resume, the objective is the first aspect of it that is read by the recruiters. You need to have this written as well as possible without any grammatical or spelling errors. You should never use lists in an objective and use an active voice when reading it. It can be a good idea to have someone else read it before you send it to the company to make sure that the entire paragraph gets your point across and has a smooth flow to it. Many times when writing, the writers misses the same mistake over and over because they simply do not see it. Fresh eyes can help avoid this problem.
