These Tips For Cover Letter Writing Can Get You The Position You Want
|
The cover letter is the main tool that is used by recruiters to decide if they look at the resume or not. For this reason, the cover letter really needs to be top notch if you want to get that coveted job. There are many mistakes that are made when writing cover letters, but if you have some insight as to what recruiters are looking for, you can write an effective resume that can get you the position you want.
The following three tips can help with your resume writing ability:
• Write the Cover Letter as if you are Reading it – Imagine if you were the recruiter who has to read every cover letter that comes across your desk. Now imagine that when you read back the cover letter that you have written. Would you want to read it all the way through? Does it peak your interest? If not, then you need to revamp it and make it really pop for the reader. You can also have a friend or family member read it through and ask them to give you their honest opinion. Make sure it is someone who has some writing skills. Those who do not may not notice the weak phrases or sentences and may gush over a poorly written cover letter because to them it is great.
• Note Highlights of Previous Positions – If you have done anything that you were awarded by at a prior position, such as made or exceeded a company goal or was made employee of the month for whatever reason, you need to list this on your cover letter. Any highlight is not too small for it. This is your time to shine and to show that you have had goals that you met and that you are eager to take on new challenging goals and meet them in the same manner.
• Include Issues not Covered in the Resume – There are a few things that you may not cover in your resume but that you need to address to the recruiter. One huge issue is moving to get a job. If you are willing to relocate for a position, make sure you state that on your cover letter. The company that you apply to may have a position in another city or state that you would be perfect for but if they do not know you are willing relocate; they may not make the connection. Any pertinent and relevant business related topics that do not have a place on a resume can be spoken about in the cover letter and can make you stand out that much more.
When formatting your resume cover letter, make sure you have a good flow to the sentences and paragraphs. Reading the document out loud to yourself can show you any areas that may be sketchy or that does not flow. This is the first impression you are offering a potential employer, you need to make it a good one.
