Tips For Beginning Resume Writing
|
You are ready to begin your job search for the first time and you really want to have a resume that impresses potential employers. You have sat at the computer and spent hours on the layout and format of the resume but you really do not know how to make the content really get the attention of recruiters.
This is not always easy for one who has never written a resume before and there can be some problems if the job that you are seeking is not one you have had before. This can be because you were in school and only working part time jobs to pay your way through. It is common for fist time job seekers to have a resume that may be lacking in this area. Do not be worried though because the following tips can help to boost your resume to aid you in getting the job you really want.
• Do Not Leave Out Internships – If you interned at a company that is in your field of study, you should include this in your list of previous employers. Highlight the skills you learned to show that you can come to this position with a working knowledge of what is going to be expected of you. Internships, even those that are not paid, show that you are willing to go the extra mile to be successful in your chosen profession.
• Non Related Work History – If you worked a part time job at the local record store or at a fast food restaurant, you can certainly include these jobs in your resume. Just make sure to highlight those aspects of the job that are going to be relevant in the position you are seeking. If you are going to be going into business and are dealing with clients on a daily basis, your previous employment can show that you have the ability to deal with people which is going to be a vital asset.
• Never Stretch the Truth – Many want to highlight themselves in the best possible way. For some, this can include embellishing on their skill level or work history. This should be avoided at all costs. You may think that getting your foot in the door is the bottom line, but you are eventually going to be found out when you are asked in for an interview. You may be able to flub on a resume, but you are not going to be able to fool an interviewer who has seen all the tricks in the books that people use to get a job. Simply be honest at all times.
Using these tips is going to make you an asset for any company and they are going to want to call you in for your interview. Be honest and use prior internships and irrelevant work history to show your potential employer that you have skills that they are going to be looking for above and beyond actual work relevance.
