Formatting a resume cover letter is a difficult document to write for many people. They simply do not know what to write or how to format it. This is common and learning how to properly format a cover letter is not difficult to do. The great thing is that once you have mastered the technique of formatting, it stays with you for the rest of your life. The cover letter is the most important aspect of the resume.
If your resume is spectacular but the cover letter falls flat, then your resume may not even be looked at. The cover letter is the first line of communication with the company so you want it to have a format that is easy to read and that coveys what you personally bring to the company and how you understand what is expected of you if you get the position.
• Why Did You Submit a Resume? – This may seem like a no brainer to many, but you really need to convey the reasons you want to work for this company. This cannot be a generic paragraph but needs to be directed specifically for the job listing and company. Read through the listing and know for sure what they company wants from you and use this as a tool for writing this paragraph.
• Where Did You See the Listing? – This also needs to be included when you are formatting the resume. If you found the listing online, then you need to show the website address and you can even include the hyperlink directly to the posting. If you heard of the listing through a friend or another employee in the company, then they should get the credit for referring you. Explain why this posting caught your eye and why you feel you can fit into this position effectively. Make sure that you highlight your skills and techniques that you can offer.
• Write with Flair – If you have the talent to write a witty cover letter then do it. There is no need to hide your personality when writing a cover letter. You want to be remembered after the recruiter has sorted through dozens of resumes. Your format needs to have something to set it apart from all of the others. Just remember that when you are writing, even though you want to show your personality, do not use contractions or slang. You can covey your personality using proper English and grammar. Each paragraph must convey a meaning and there must be a flow from one paragraph to the next.
Once you learn how to format a resume then you can do each one with ease for each position that you are applying for. There is no reason to skip the cover letter when they are so easy to produce when you have the above formatting techniques nailed down. Do not be afraid to put in your own flair when writing your cover letter if you want your name to be remembered at the end of the day.
