There are so many people in sales these days that are looking for employment that many end up not being hired because they do not know how to write a good resume. The fact is that there are more people than there are jobs so a resume needs to be done really well in order for you to be chosen for the interview based on your resume. After all, the cover letter and resume are the first impression that you are going to make so you want it to be a strong statement about your abilities and success in sales.
Know the Product
If you are applying to sell something similar to what you have sold previously, then this is not much of an issue. Make sure you note this on your cover letter and resume so the company knows that you have the experience. If you are not going to stay in the niche that you have been working in, then you need to study up on the products or services that you are going to be pitching. It is going to be impossible for you to sell anything that you have no working knowledge of. Do your research and offer some reasons why you could sell their products or services on your cover letter so they can see your commitment.
Note Any Other Skills You Can Offer Besides Sales
Sales are just not sitting on the phone all day trying to push products. There is also customer service and other skills that you are going to bring to the company. Make sure you highlight these skills to show yourself in a better light. Smaller companies may appreciate a salesman who knows how to change the toner in the copy machine. Perhaps you are good with computers and there is no IT department. Your transferable skills are going to be worth just as much as your sales skills to some companies.
Remember to Include Any Awards and Achievements
If you were Salesperson of the Year at any time at any company, you should add this to your resume. This shows that you do have great sales skills and can be the deciding factor when the choices of candidates are narrowed down to you and another. Anything that shows how well you have done in previous sales positions should be included. Even if you simply won a contest once because you outsold your group of co workers, this can also allow the company to see you are going to go to all lengths to bring them in business.
Anything you can write on your resume that puts you a head above the rest should be included in it. Again, this is the first impression and your first, and sometimes only, shot to get the interview. You want to include any small detail that is going to get in to the office to sell yourself to the company’s representative.
