What Not To Do When Writing A Resume
|
When writing a resume, there are many ways that you can make mistakes not only in the resume, but in the way it is presented. If you want your resume to effectively represent you, you should avoid these mistakes above all else. Putting your time and energy into the perfect looking resume is going to be for naught if the hiring agent simply moves your resume to the bottom of the pile.
• Overly Decorated Resume Paper – You cannot walk into any office supply store without seeing rows of resume paper that look decorative. This paper is expensive and is not really going to get your resume any more notice than if it were submitting on a good plain white piece of paper. The format of the resume is much more important than the paper it is printed on. Employers are not going to hire you based on how much you spend on paper. The content is the most important aspect of the resume so save your money and skip the high end resume paper.
• Font Size – While you may want to put as much information on one page as possible by using a very small font size, this can actually be the death of a good resume. Let the resume go to two pages if you have to and make the font a decent size that can be seen when sitting on a desk. An 11 point or 12 point font is large enough to be easily read without being too big for the page. Anything smaller can give the person who is doing the hiring a difficult time in reading it. If your information cannot be easily read, they are not going to bother getting out a magnifying glass to read it and they are going to simply pass it up.
• Graphics – While you may want to pretty up your resume by putting in some cute or thought provoking graphics, leave them out. There are much better ways to make your resume stand out from the others without using graphics. Graphics are pointless and take up space that should be filled with your credentials and past work history. You can make your resume stand out by using a larger font size on your name and by using the bold and italic letters offered in every word processor.
• Paper Size – Never use a paper size that would not be considered standard. A typical sheet of paper is eight and half inches by eleven inches and this is the size you want your resume printed out on. Also, never justify the page in a landscape format and only use the portrait. Landscape is when the page is longer than it is tall. This is just going to be confusing to the person who is reading it and it is not going to make you stand out.
If you can avoid the above mistakes when creating your resume you are going to give yourself a better chance at finding the perfect job. Remember that content is key. The format can go hand in hand with the content, but being fancy or adding graphics that are unnecessary is just a waste of time.
