You Can Easily Write Your Own Professional Resume
|
If you find yourself suddenly in the job market, don’t feel alone. Unemployment rates are climbing daily making it harder and harder to find even a part time job not to mention an actual career in your field. You may be wondering how you will be able to afford to pay your mortgage let alone pay for someone to work up a professional resume to help you find a new job. Well, you can ease your mind on the resume part at least. You can easily write your own professional resume, you don’t need to pay someone to do it for you.
When it comes to selling yourself, your skills, and your knowledge, who better to write your resume than the person it is about? You can write your resume, it will be professional and you will be proud to submit it to a potential employer. You just need to know how to do it right.
The first thing you need to do is draw up a basic outline of the information you want to include on your resume. Ideally, your finished resume will be about 2 pages total. So you can leave out anything about extracurricular activities from school, or personal hobbies. You want to highlight your job experience, your educational achievements, your objectives and expectations and sell yourself as the best person for the position.
Once you have an outline you can go ahead and begin laying it out in resume form. The first thing on the first page should be your contact information. The next section should be your achievements, these work like an over the fold advertisement on a newspaper, they make your potential employer want to read more and contact you for an interview.
The next section of your resume will detail for your potential employer what makes you qualified for the position. This is the place to “toot your own horn” using professional terminology to explain your experience in your field and special projects and advances you were involved in.
The second page should include your education, degrees and certifications and your references. Remember this is a professional resume and you need to include three professional references. A potential employer isn’t going to be happy if they begin calling references and find out that some phone numbers aren’t in service or that each of the people listed haven’t seen you since high school, or that they are family members. Include only complete, correct contact information for 3 previous coworkers or employers as references.
Keep your resume succinct and straightforward. It isn’t an essay or a poem; it is a basic outline of your professional history, abilities and promise. A simple layout with all the necessary information will draw the eye of a potential employer more than a 6 page detailed life story. If they want to read a biography they can go to a library, if they want to hire the best person for the job they will read your resume.
Now you know how to write a professional resume. While the content is the main thing, you should also pay attention to the font you use and the spacing. Make sure that your resume is easy to read and organized in a manner that the information flows somewhat in order.
