CV Resume

A CV resume is more often than not a misunderstood term. If the career document you need to make is for a position in the United States and you are not involved with academia, medicine or scientific research, you should be creating a resume, not a CV.

A curriculum vitae (CV) provides an summary of a person’s life and professional qualifications. It differs from a resume in that it is often used for academic or medical careers and is far more comprehensive and thorough. A CV further details a professionals education to a greater degree than a standard professional resume. Often times a resume is custom-made according to the job or position applied for. It is job and industry specific. One of the key characteristics of a professional resume versus a CV is brevity.

It is not uncommon for an individual from Europe who is applying for a job in the United States to think he or she should be using the very formal CV format to present themselves.

In the United States a CV is expected to include a comprehensive listing of professional experience including every term of employment, academic credentials, publications, contributions and significant achievements if applicable. In certain career professions, it probably includes samples of the person’s work and might consist of many pages and examples.

Nine out of ten times a person who thinks they should be using a CV resume format would be doing themselves a big disservice by doing so.
