You found it, the job you always wanted, or at least the advertisement for it. Now, how do you get it? Your resume is your first point of contact with your potential new employer. How do you create the best resume possible? How do you get your employer to notice you? Finding sample resumes on the internet are a great way to begin the process. There are tons of free sample resumes that you can look through to give you ideas.

Find the sample resumes that are geared for your specific industry and job type. But don’t just copy them. Relying totally on sample resumes will not assist you to stand out in the crowd.

Sample resumes are written to be general. And you want your advertisement for you to be specific. You want it to address the needs of the company and to be about what that specific employer wants and needs and how you can be of value to the company. So before you begin, analyze the job announcement. Ask yourself if you were doing the hiring what would you want, what would make you pause as you scanned several hundred resumes? Sample resumes alone are not going to give you that answer.

Sample resumes are intended as the skeleton upon which you build. You need to provide the muscle which is what makes it move.

The two most important muscles in your resume are the objective and the summary. The content of both of these come from your analysis of what the company is seeking. The objective should show the company that you are looking for the job that they have to offer. Use words that are reflective of their job requirements. Sample resumes can show you the proper form for the objective.

The summary is where you get to showcase yourself. It’s your time to shine. The way you shine is to show off the achievements you have that emphasize your potential value to the company in the position they want to fill. Again, sample resumes are a great guide for you. Sample resumes can give you the form of the summary, but you need to fill it in with the meat of what you offer to this company.

If you are planning on sending hardcopy resumes out, then download several of the free sample resumes and print them out. Look to see which ones attract you. If you line them all up on a table which one would you naturally pick up. That’s probably the format for you to use.

There’s no rule that says you have to use just one of the free sample resumes. You can use several – one for overall formatting, another for overall style and yet another for wording.

No matter how many free sample resumes you use, it’s still your content that is going to make the difference. What skills have you acquired in your life thus far? Some of these skills may have been in school, or in a club, or from your hobby. Others may have been acquired in after school jobs. Are you computer and internet savvy? Did you receive any awards? What other achievements do you have?

Answers to these questions will form the content for the style and format you’ve chosen when looking through the free sample resumes? This is your advertising brochure for yourself. It is important to keep in mind that employers are looking for the best and most valuable addition to their company. In sales terminology, they are looking to see how you will benefit their company and their goals. So, they care more about your achievements than about your duties or responsibilities.

Font choice is another important decision. And you will find differing opinions. Look at the free sample resumes you’ve downloaded. What do they use? Which one attracts you? Why? Do you think it will attract a prospective employer? Why?

The one thing free sample resumes cannot help you with is grammar and spelling. Carefully check your resume for parallel construction and grammar issues. Have someone else check it? Have another person check it. You cannot have too many people check it. You want this document to be absolutely error free.
