For my money, my time and effort, a skills resume is the resume of choice.
In our hyper competitive employment market the competition for jobs is at an all time high. Not only do you only get a minute or two to make a great impression there just are not enough jobs to go around. Only the best resumes will result in the job seeker getting interviewed.
With a skills resume you can effectively highlight at the top of your resume the skills, experience and accomplishments that make you the PERFECT candidate for the job. With a skills resume format you control the information and make it easy for the employer to see how you will be a valuable employee. If you use a resume format or layout that requires the lazy resume reader to hunt for reasons to interview you, you have used the wrong resume style.
A skills resume makes it easy for the employer to help you and interview you.
Of course if you do not have any marketable skills or skills that are applicable to the job you are applying to, a skills resume format would not be the right choice. You might be better off using a functional or chronological resume format.
With a skills resume format you can target and customize the skills section at the top of the resume for each different position you apply for, thus not having to write a completely new targeted resume for each job.
